This guide explains how to correctly perform ID checks for age-restricted sales under company compliance and New Zealand law. Always check anyone who looks under 30.
Follow these steps every time to ensure accuracy and consistency across stores.
1. Identify When an ID Check Is Needed

Any customer who appears under 25 must show ID.

Do not rely on repeat visits — ID must still be verified if unsure.

2. Accepted Forms of ID

✅ Valid NZ Driver’s License
✅ NZ or Foreign Passport
✅ HANZ 18+ or Kiwi Access Card​​

3. Verifying the ID

Check photo matches customer.

Check date of birth — confirm they are 18 or older.

Check expiry date — expired IDs are not valid.

Check for security features (hologram, raised text, etc.).

4. Handling Refusals or Invalid ID

Politely refuse the sale.

Use calm, respectful language:

“Sorry, I can’t complete this sale without valid ID.”
